If you have ever studied African history, there is a big chance that you learnt about the Chwezi dynasty! You must have learnt that these guys were Demi gods, able to do things that no one else did. A good example is here.
Ancient African women invested a lot of time on Romance!
Romance is something that was rarely a public topic in many parts of ancient Africa. Children would rarely learn about it until they were of age. Even then, such matters would be spoken about privately. And the tools used, the words, the slogans, and everything about it were kept away from the public and the children. A lot of sexually oriented words as well as the sexual body parts were forbidden in public. Kids would get a beating for mentioning them. But we learnt that such words were loved by the adults when between the sheets!
In my culture, the women had to always hide in the bush. From the day a girl saw her periods, she would be enrolled into longterm training on sex, love and romance. Interestingly, a mother would never teach her daughter anything to do with what happens in the bedroom. Her training was on discipline, sitting posture, cooking skills, home management and hospitality among others.
Teachings on romance were a preserve of the girl’s aunts. The young lady would spend lots of time with the aunt, and when a potential husband was found, it had to be the aunt to give word that the young lady is ready. On the wedding night, the aunt personally supervised the girl’s performance in bed. That is how serious matters were taken. Of course each tribe had their own way of doing this, but the detail was always there.
In Ankole, one of the tribes from southwest of Uganda, there is a small pot called Rukomyo. This pot is made with three holes, and a fairly long neck shaped like a man’s genital. Rukomyo was, and still is, used in traditional Ankole culture for newly marrieds. It’s one of the presents that a girls parents will give to her on the day she’s given away to her husband.
A woman would put herbs, burn them inside this pot to produce a good scent. The scent helps in keeping the lady’s “south” clean and makes the whole bedroom smell good. She simply sits on it and covers herself with the a big cloth to allow the scent fill her body. She gently moves the elongated neck up and down her “south”, as the three holes produce the scent, until she feels perfect.
By the time the husband returns home, everything is romantic. So, ladies invested time in preparing for love! Even the man would return home in high anticipation of a bedroom feast! It is said that the herbs didn’t only produce good scent but they also gave the woman an extra layer of hygiene.

This year I visited Sierra Leone for the first time in my life. On arrival at Freetown International Airport, I was amazed at the warm reception of the immigration officers, the transporters, the banking staff and everyone I met. I didn’t feel like a foreigner at all. Over the next few days that I stayed, I realised that the people of this country are seated on a tourism goldmine!
Can you believe this? In 2024, I met this man somewhere on River Nile in Uganda. He said, he was born on 18th February, some 70 years ago. His father was born on the same day and that’s how they’re born. His successor, a young man was also born on the same day.
